Low Resolution Issue in Ubuntu Intrepid without Monitor

Limited 800x600 resolution on Ubuntu Intrepid

I have installed and configured a headless server (a server without monitor, keyboard or mouse) for file storage, all has gone to plan up till the step of setting the resolution of a system that has no monitor connected making auto-detection impossible.

The goal of this headless server is to have a screen resolution of 1024×768 or higher when connected via a typical VNC (remote desktop management) connection.

After extensive research within the Ubuntu forums as well as general Google searches there seems no easy way to ‘force’ the screen resolution within Ubuntu, existing releases of Ubuntu included an application called displayconfig-gtk which enabled users to specify their resolution, my understanding is that in Ubuntu Intrepid (8.1 Beta) this application has been deprecated and there is no suitable alternative.
